Alisha Allen scored 13 points and grabbed nine boards against UCA on Wednesday
Final Stats CONWAY, Ark. – Facing the Southland's top-rated defense, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team could never get its offense going as the Colonels were defeated, 67-47, by Central Arkansas on Wednesday night at the Farris Center.
Nicholls (13-13, 6-7) was held to 29 percent shooting for the game and connected on only 5-of-20 from behind the arc. Junior
Alisha Allen led the Colonels with 14 points and nine boards, while
KK Babin and
Sumar Leslie added 10 points apiece.
The Colonels, who came into the game ranked 10th in the NCAA in free-throw percentage (.773), also struggled at the line, making 6-of-12. Nicholls lost the rebounding battle, 40-37, but was outscored inside 43-20.
UCA (22-4, 12-1) never trailed in the contest as they raced out to a 6-0 lead. The Colonels scored their first points on a basket by Leslie, but would then go three minutes without scoring, falling behind 18-2 at the 13:10 mark. The Sugar Bears, who are undefeated at home, led by as much as 22 in the opening stanza before heading into the break up 38-18.
In the second half, the shooting woes continued early on for the Colonels as the Sugar Bears swelled the lead to 25. Nicholls was able to come within 13 points at the 12-minute mark after a Babin 3-pointer, but the first-half deficit proved to be too much.
UCA shot 50.9 percent for the game and was led by Megan Hebert with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Nakeia Guiden finished with 21 points.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday when they host McNeese State at 3:30 p.m. Before the game, Nicholls will host its Second Annual Alumni Game, followed by a special presentation for Alumnae of the Year, as well as a dedication to its new locker room. The Alumni Game is set to start at 11:30.
