The Colonels are two wins away from tying the program record (14)
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to continue one of the most successful seasons in program history on Wednesday as the Colonels welcome Stephen F. Austin for the teams' only regular season meeting. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday's matchup will also be Academic Night, where Nicholls will honor all of its student-athletes at halftime who obtained a 3.0 GPA or better in the fall semester. Also before the game, Nicholls will recognize junior forward
Alisha Allen, who joined the 1,000-point club in the win at Texas State.
“I'm very excited for our team going into this matchup against Stephen F. Austin,” said Nicholls women's basketball head coach
DoBee Plaisance. “I'm excited about their carryover, enthusiasm, passion and energy that they displayed in the Texas State game. SFA is coming in here as one of the top teams in the league, beating both McNeese and Central Arkansas. They are a very good team and we're looking forward to a great game on Wednesday night.”
Nicholls (12-10, 5-4) put on an offensive clinic in the second half at Texas State on Saturday, shooting 63 percent in to final 20 minutes to outscore the Bobcats, 53-38, en route to a nine-point victory. The Colonel scoring trio of
Sumar Leslie, Allen and
KK Babin combined for 69 of the Colonels' 83 points, led by a game-high 29 from Leslie. Throughout the season, each has been ranked in the top 15 in scoring in the Southland. Leslie currently ranks third (16.6 ppg), Allen is 11th (14.0) and Babin sits at 14th (13.2).
The Ladyjacks (15-6, 5-3) head into the matchup winners of three of their last four, which includes a 66-58 victory over McNeese on Saturday. SFA is led by one of the conference's best all-around players, Tammara Marion. Marion is sixth in the league in scoring (15.4 ppg), ranks 12th in assists (2.9) and leads the SLC with 2.7 3-pointers per game. However, Babin, who sank five from downtown on Saturday, is nipping at her heels with a 2.6 average.
The Colonels knocked off SFA in last season's only matchup, 75-62, in Nacogdoches, but the Ladyjacks hold a commanding 38-3 lead in the all-time series. After falling in the first matchup, SFA went over 20 years without losing another game to Nicholls as they won 32 consecutive contests.
