KATY, Texas - After defeating No. 1-seed Central Arkansas in the opening round, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will take on No. 4-seed Stephen F. Austin on Thursday in the semifinals of the 2011-12 Southland Conference Tournament. Tipoff at the Merrell Center is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
The semifinal between Nicholls (15-15) and Stephen F. Austin (22-8) will be broadcast on 100.3 FM KLRZ and 1600 KLEM, with
Mike Wagenheim calling the play-by-play. Live video streaming will also be available on SLC NOW and ESPN3.
Nicholls used a tournament record 14 3-pointers to upset the Sugar Bears, claiming its first win ever in the postseason.
LiAnn McCarthy poured in a career-high 32 points, accounting for half of the Colonels' 3-pointers.
Sumar Leslie posted her third double-double of the season, scoring 10 points with a career-best 13 assists.
The Ladyjacks advanced in the 4/5 matchup, defeating Lamar, 73-64. Tammara Marion led four SFA players in double figures, scoring 16 points to lead SFA to the second round for the first time since 2007.
Nicholls and SFA squared off earlier this season, with Nicholls escaping with a 64-63 in Thibodaux. In a closely contested battle throughout, the Colonels used a steal by
KK Babin that led to a game-winning 3-pointer by
Jenny Nash in the final seconds. Despite the win, Nicholls still trails the all-time series 38-4.
