BATON ROUGE, La.  –
The Nicholls State University softball team fell behind eight runs after the first inning against No. 13 LSU and it would be all the Tigers needed as the Colonels fell in five innings, 8-0, Wednesday night at Tiger Park.

Nicholls drops to 9-14 on the year, while LSU ups its record to 20-5. The Colonels will return to conference play this weekend, taking on Northwestern State in a three-game series.

Senior Ashley Bertot recorded the only hit for Nicholls, leading off the game with an infield single. LSU starter Ashley Czechner (5-0) tossed all five innings, striking out five in the five-inning shutout.

Senior Ashton Bennett (6-6) lasted only two-thirds of an inning as LSU ripped six hits to score all eight runs in its first at-bat. Bennett walked two and had one strikeout. Freshman Hannah Haydel pitched well in relieve, giving up three hits in 3.1 innings.

LSU finished with nine hits, led by Tammy Wray with two. Jacee Blades and Sandra Simmons drove in two each.
