The Colonels won their first Southland Conference series of the year this past weekend, earning a sweep of McNeese State to get back into the hunt in the race to the conference tournament next month. The last team to get swept by the Colonels in league play also happened to be the Cowboys which came at the end of the 2011 season.

Having perfect 4-0 week also got Nicholls back above .500 on the season, improving the team's record to 21-20 overall and 5-10 in conference play. It is the fourth consecutive 20-win season for the team, matching the program's recent longest string that happened from the early to mid 2000's.

Nicholls brought the offense all weekend against the Cowboys, outhitting McNeese State 35-20 during the series and holding a 19-5 advantage in runs. In one of the most compete weekend efforts since the San Jose State series, the Colonels were strong at the plate and on the mound, hitting .343 while holding a staff ERA of 1.33.

One of the players leading Nicholls with the sticks was junior outfielder Keith Cormier. Cormier hit .471 at the plate with eight hits, including three home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored in all four games last week. For his efforts he was named the Southland Conference and LSWA Hitter of the Week after his late-game heroics against the Cajuns and in the opener against the Cowboys.

Not to be outdone, however, Nicholls had five players hit above .350 and four with .400 averages over the last week as Leo Vargas also hit .471 with eight hits, a double, three RBI and four runs scored.

Matt Richard continues to play through injury and in just the McNeese series alone hit .462 with six hits and four runs scored, crossing the plate three times in the finale. He is currently tied atop the league standings with 16 total stolen bases on the season. Another player who needed a big week was Philip Lyons, who overcame a bit of a slump at the plate to hit .429, while Tyler Duplantis had his third triple of the season and hit .357.

The boatloads of offense the team produced was not lost on the pitching staff, as the Colonel hurlers stifled the opposition, holding teams to just a .225 batting average and eight runs scored.

The staff seemed to get better as the weekend went on culminating in the complete game shutout pitched by Brandon Jackson in the finale. In just his eighth appearance, Jackson earned his second win allowing just six hits with five strikeouts to just two walks.

Kory Delange earned his second complete game win of the season to move to 6-3 on the year with seven strikeouts to just one walk to lower his season ERA to a paltry 2.42. The series started with Mike Suk, with the righty setting the tone in his nine strikeout performance in seven innings with an opponent batting average of .136.

The relievers also got into the act with Jordan McCoy and Marc Picciola picking up wins in their respective outings, as Picciola and Kelby Langston had flawless ERA's to combine to give up an unearned run on just two hits.

New Orleans is currently on a five-game losing streak entering tomorrow's contest, dropping all three games to nationally-ranked Oklahoma over the weekend to fall to 6-36 on the season. However, the Privateers turned the fourth triple play in school history in game two.

The Colonels have won their last four midweek non-conferences games, which began with a 14-4 win over the Privateers on March 26 in Thibodaux. To date, the Colonels have won their last seven non-conference games dating back to the San Jose State series when Nicholls took the final three games of that series.

Taylor Byrd will earn the start for Nicholls, with UNO to counter with left-handed freshman pitcher Stephen Potter.
