Colonels to Face Rival Southeastern La. for Weekend Series

THIBODAUX, La.  – The Nicholls softball team will look to win its third consecutive Southland Conference series as the Colonels make the short trip to Hammond for a three-game set against rival Southeastern Louisiana.

Saturday's doubleheader at North Oak Park is scheduled for 3 p.m., with Sunday's finale slated for noon. Sunday's game can be listened to on ThibodauxOnline.com.

The Colonels (16-19, 6-6) split their non-conference doubleheader last Tuesday, defeating Grambling 14-3 before falling at Louisiana Tech 6-5. Nicholls has won six of its last nine outings, but only one win has come on the road. Thirteen of the Colonels' wins have been at home or on a neutral field this season, with the team holding a 3-8 record in road games.

In the three road wins, while the team is batting nearly .300 in those victories, the pitching staff has been virtually unhittable, holding teams to a .137 average. Against Northwestern State, which ranks second in the league in batting average, Nicholls limited the Lady Demons to just six hits in its 6-4 victory. However, in the eight losses, the pitching staff posts a 5.80 ERA and the team is hitting at .218 mark, despite freshman Haley Parkerson's .368 average.

Parkerson heads into the weekend with a 14-game on-base streak, including recording a base hit in 12 games. During the span, she is hitting .341 with eight RBIs. On the year, she has a .284
average and is second on the team in stolen bases with eight.

Overall, Nicholls is hitting .266, two points better than its opponents. Senior Ashley Bertot continues to climb up the batting average ranking in the Southland as she is now in the top 20 at .348. Bertot leads the Colonels with 12 multi-hit games, followed by Leah Andrus with 10. Andrus leads the team with 21 RBIs and is third on the team in batting (.321).

Junior Katie Moulder was credited with both decisions in the doubleheader, earning her first win of the season in the rout against Grambling. Moulder has appeared in 14 games and leads the team with a 2.72 ERA. Senior Ashton Bennett and freshman Hannah Haydel have handled the pitching duties in conference, with Bennett 4-4 in eight starts while Haydel is 2-2.

Southeastern (22-12, 7-5) heads into the series with a three-game winning streak after sweeping its doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday. The Lady Lions have been impressive at home, holding a 13-5 record. In conference play, SLU has won both of its series in Hammond, defeating Sam Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi two games to one.

The Lady Lions are batting .282 as a team, led by Katie Lacour who ranks fifth in the SLC at an even .400. Michelle Duhe has 39 hits on the year for a .351 average, while Amber Sather is hitting .333 and is fourth in the conference with 33 RBIs.

In the circle, Rachael Hellyer heads the staff with a 9-1 record and a 2.09 ERA. In 67 innings pitched, she has surrendered just 20 earned runs and has eight complete games. The Lady Lions' No. 2 pitcher has been Kenna Terry, who is 6-2 with a team-high 44 strikeouts.

In last season's two-game series, the Colonels dominated SLU with a pair of run-rule victories at home. Nicholls took the first game of the doubleheader 8-0 before earning the sweep with a 10-2 victory. The Colonels had 21 hits on the day, while Bennett and Moulder gave up six combined.
