Colonels Close Non-Conference Schedule At Tulane Tuesday

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team closes out its non-conference portion of the schedule Tuesday night in New Orleans by taking on the Tulane Green Wave at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The game will be aired live on KTIB 640 AM in Thibodaux and online at ThibodauxOnline.com. Live stats and video of the game will be provided by Tulane through their All-Access page, with links to both on the homepage of GeauxColonels.com.

Nicholls enters the game with a 23-25 overall record after a tough weekend against Sam Houston State, but the Colonels have won their last five mid-week games and last eight non-conference games overall heading into the matchup with the Green Wave who is 23-22 on the season. The Colonels are looking for their 18th out-of-conference win of the season, as well as snapping a season-long four game losing streak.

Taylor Byrd will get the start on Tuesday, as he aims for his sixth win of the season on the mound, with Tulane countering with redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Randy LeBlanc.

With the third sweep since conference play began, the Colonels had another tough weekend dropping all three games to league-leading Sam Houston State where the team was outhit 45-16 and outscored 35-10. The Bearkats were the first team this season to register double-digit hits and runs in all three games of a weekend series, as Sam hit .421 as a group during the weekend.

Offensively, the Colonels struggled with a .182 average at the plate and had just one game with more than five in leading to two run-rule contests. Nicholls was held to a season-low two hits in the finale and was shut out for just the third time all season in the opener.

No Colonel player had more than three hits on the weekend, as Tyler Duplantis earned all three of his hits in the Saturday contest, while Keith Cormier, Leo Vargas, Brandon Jackson David Zorn and Mike Barba had two each. Duplantis had his hitting streak snapped, but still remains in the top 15 hitters in the Southland. Zorn and Duplantis were the only two players with muti-hit contests during the series, as Matt Richard was 3-for-3 on stolen bases to give him 19 on the season and puts him second in the league in that category.

The woes of the pitching staff were great against Sam, as the team had an earned run average of 13.29 over the weekend with all but Byrd having ERA's in the double figures. The Colonels had eight hurlers pitch over the weekend six gave up four or more runs, while four gave up five or more, with Kory Delange being the only starter to last more than five innings in a start. The Bearkats also belted a home run in each game, as Nichols has now given up a home run in five of the last six games to opponents.

On Tuesday, Nicholls will be looking to do something it hasn't done since 1990 in defeating the Green Wave three times in the same season. With Tulane holding the all-time series lead 54-24, a third win over Tulane would be a rare feat with the team's earlier 6-5 and 5-3 wins over the Green Wave.

Tulane does not have a player averaging above .300 at the plate, with Brennan Middleton leads the squad with a .293 average with 54 hits, six doubles, and a triple. Garrett Cannizaro leads the team in RBI with 27, while Tony Rizzotti has the best ERA (1.83) and most wins (5) on the team this season.

First pitch for the game is set for 6:30 p.m. in New Orleans.
