THIBODAUX, La. – It came down to the final set on Tuesday night as the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team downed Abilene Christian University 3-2 in Stopher Gymnasium.
Eager to snap their four-game slide, the Colonels (8-15, 4-6 SLC) came out on fire, earning a decisive 25-16 victory in the first set. The Wildcats (4-21, 2-9 SLC) pushed back in the second, taking a 25-20 win and tying the match. Nicholls rebounded in the third, powering to a 25-20 victory.
The Colonels looked to be pulling away in the fourth, but a last-minute ACU comeback allowed the Wildcats to steal a 25-22 win and send the match to a fifth set. Nicholls fell behind 7-5 in the fifth, but the team found another gear, coming from behind to take the set 15-11 and seal the victory.
Kaci Eaton had a monster night with 25 kills and .404 hitting percentage, both season-highs.
Ainsley Marroccoli led the team in assists with 37 and added 10 digs, while
Alyse Barclay contributed 22 assists on the night.
Kalynn Egea paced the squad with 26 digs and
Mikayla Miller had a season-high seven blocks.
Dorothy Swanson led the Abilene Christian offensively with 15 kills and added 16 digs. Nicole Morales led the Wildcats with 18 digs, while Tucker Smith had a team-high 19 assists. Neely Borger and Corinne Grandcolas each contributed five blocks in the match.
Nicholls will host Southeastern Louisiana University at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday before taking on the University of New Orleans at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Stopher Gymnasium.
