THIBODAUX, La. – After a week off due to finals, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to put together its first winning streak of the young season as the Colonels head to North Louisiana to take on Louisiana Tech on Monday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.
The game will be broadcast live on KNSU 91.5 FM, with pre-game coverage scheduled to start at 6:20 p.m.
Nicholls (3-3) heads to Ruston looking for its first win on the road in the series against Louisiana Tech (3-4). The Colonels picked up their first victory against the Lady Techsters last season with an 80-78 win at Stopher Gym. LA Tech won the first 15 games of the series, which began in 1974.
The Colonels have alternated wins and losses this season, winning their last outing 66-62 against South Alabama at home. The win improved Nicholls' record to 2-0 at home, but the team is still searching for its first road win, falling at Arkansas and Tulane.
In the win over South Alabama, Nicholls found its shooting touch, knocking down a season-high 46 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line. The offense got away from relying on the 3-point shot, shooting a season-low 16 from behind the arc, but still managed to connect on six.
Against South Alabama, Nicholls received a big game off the bench from freshman
Tia Charles, who had a career-best 19 points. Charles, averaging 6.5 points on the year, has been the Colonels' leading scoring at 10.5 points per game since leading scorer
Emani White has been sidelined with an injury.
For the year, the Colonels are shooting 36 percent from the field while holding opponents to 41 percent. Nicholls continues to be one of the best teams in the Southland in free throw percentage (.762), but the opposition has attempted 33 more free throws on the season.
Louisiana Tech is coming off a near victory over ranked Mississippi State, but the Lady Techsters were unable to maintain a seven-point lead at half time, falling to MSU 81-77. Kelia Shelton had a huge game for LA Tech, scoring 31 points on 11-of-21 from the field.
Shelton leads three players who are scoring in double figures at 13.7 ppg. Whitney Frazier is second on the team at 12.9 points, followed by JaQuan Jackson at 12.0.
Louisiana Tech is averaging 67 points a game, allowing 68.4, while the Colonels are scoring at a 61.3 clip and surrendering 66.8 points per contest. The teams do not have a common opponent, but LA Tech has split its games against Southland Conference members, defeating Stephen F. Austin 76-69 before dropping a 69-57 decision to Northwestern State.
Following Monday night's game, Nicholls returns to the court in the Athletes in Action Tournament hosted by Texas Tech, starting Friday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m. against the host Lady Raiders.
