Tuesday night's tilt will mark the first road game for the Colonels (1-1) this season as head coach
DoBee Plaisance's squad started the year with a split at home. Nicholls opened with an easy 98-65 victory over SUNO before falling to Prairie View A&M, 81-70.
Nicholls is averaging 84 points and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field after its first two games. On the defensive side, the Colonels have tallied 32 steals and are holding opponents to just 27.3 percent shooting from long range.
Junior
Hope Pawlowski has been the team's leading scorer and rebounder so far, averaging 17 points and six boards. She also has a team-high nine steals and is tied for the lead in assists with seven. Also scoring in double figures are freshmen
Sammi Deakin-Sharpe (13.0 ppg) and
Cassidy Barrios (11.0), and senior
Jovana Mandic (12.0). All three are shooting over 50 percent from the field, led by Mandic's 60 percent clip.
Nicholls has yet to win a road opener under Coach Plaisance, but the opposition has been stern in those matchups. The last five road openers have come against Arkansas, No. 9 Baylor, No. 24 DePaul, Alabama and Ole Miss'. New Mexico falls in the same category as the Lobos play their home games in "The Pit" where they have reeled off 14 consecutive victories.
New Mexico (2-1) is coming off a 13-point victory over Sacramento State on Saturday, and the Lobos opened the season with a win over Southland Conference member Houston Baptist, 65-57. The Lobos are averaging 69.3 points per contest and have four players averaging nine or more points. Leading the offense is Cherise Beynon and Khadijah Shumpert at 11.3 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.
Tuesday will mark the third meeting between the two programs, with New Mexico looking to stay undefeated. The last matchup came in 2007 where the Lobos defeated Nicholls, 79-49, behind a 48-point second half.
