LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team's arduous road trip continues as the squad heads to Sin City for two games in as many days, beginning with a matchup against Hampton at 2 p.m. central time on Tuesday.
The Colonels (3-7) will look to snap a four-game skid and earn their first road win of the season against the Pirates (4-5).
Nicholls and Hampton have mirror schedules over the last two games, with both teams suffering losses to No. 18 SMU and Colorado. The Colonels dropped an 86-42 decision against the Mustangs, before falling to the Buffaloes, 85-68, on Friday. The Pirates were downed by SMU, 105-72, and are coming off of a 95-53 loss to Colorado on Saturday.
Tuesday's matchup between Nicholls and Hampton will be the first in program history.
Nicholls is averaging 66.5 points and surrendering 81.0 per game. The Colonels shoot 38.2% from the floor and 27.8% from three points range, while allowing 49.0% and 31.2% respectively. Nicholls has a -11.0 rebounding margin and a +0.9 turnover margin this year.
Hampton averages 72.6 points and gives up 80.6 per contest. The Pirates shoot 40.7% from the field and 30.1% from beyond the arc, while surrendering 44.3% and 36.4% respectively. Hampton has a -1.2 rebounding margin and a -1.2 turnover margin on the season.
Ja'Dante' Frye and
T.J. Carpenter headline the Colonels' attack. Frye leads Nicholls in average points (17.7), rebounds (6.2) and steals (1.3). Carpenter is second on the team in average points (13.1) and rebounds (5.7), while pacing the squad with 2.5 assists per game.
Reginald Johnson Jr. leads the Pirate offense with 17.2 points and 3.3 assists per contest. Quinton Chievous is averaging a double-double for Hampton, with 16.5 points and 10.5 boards per game. Brian Darden averages 12.9 points, and has been outstanding at the charity stripe, knocking down 92.6% of his free throw attempts this year.
The Colonels will play their second and final contest of the Las Vegas Classic on Wednesday, against either ULM or Canisius. The time and opponent for Wednesday's contest will be determined after the conclusion of Tuesday's action.
