THIBODAUX, La. – Looking to stay in the hunt for the program's first conference championship, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will go for its seventh consecutive victory as the Colonels host Northwestern State on Wednesday night for their annual Pink Game/Stuff Stopher event.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The first 200 students in attendance will receive a free #Geauxcolonels Spirit Stick. The Colonels will be wearing their special pink uniforms and fans are also encouraged to wear pink to help promote breast cancer awareness.
The Colonels (13-10, 9-3 SLC) are coming off a high-scoring 93-80 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, which featured two historic accomplishments – one by the team and one by an individual. The win was the squad's sixth in a row, which had never been accomplished in program history. Also, junior guard
Emani White surpassed the 1,000-point mark to become only the 13th Colonel to achieve the milestone. White had a huge game for the Colonels, scoring 16 points off the bench.
During the winning streak, the Colonels have made 45.7 percent of their field goals, 42.6 percent from 3-point range and 76.1 percent at the free throw line. Senior
Jenny Nash leads the team in scoring in the six games, averaging 15.8 points. Nash has been lights out from long range, making 18 of 32 for a 56.3 percent clip. Freshman
Tia Charles has averaged 11.2 points, followed by
Shay Arnick (9.8) and White (9.7).
On the other end of the court, opponents are at just 39 percent from the field, 30.3 percent from 3-point range and 58.3 percent at the line. Nicholls, which had struggled with rebounding and turnovers throughout the season, has a plus-4.6 advantage on the boards during the streak and has one less turnover.
Northwestern State, which is the last team to defeat the Colonels, head to Thibodaux after losing in overtime at McNeese on Saturday, 68-57. The Lady Demons (13-11, 8-5 SLC) started out conference play by winning their first three road games, but have since lost three in a row. Overall, NSU has dropped four of its last five.
The Lady Demons are led by point guard Janelle Perez, who ranks second in scoring in Southland play at 19.6 points per. In NSU's 74-71 win over Nicholls on Jan. 21 in Natchitoches, Perez scored 15 of her game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Demons to victory.
Northwestern State has won three straight against the Colonels, improving its record in the all-time series to 63-8.
