THIBODAUX, La. – On Tuesday night the Nicholls State University earned a 1-0 victory in a defensive battle against Lamar University that took just over two hours, but the series-finale on Wednesday was the complete opposite as the Cardinals came away with a 9-7 win in an 11-inning offensive marathon that took over four hours at Ray E. Didier Field.
Lamar (8-12, 0-6 SLC) took an early lead when Bredan Satran crushed a three-run home run in the second inning. The Colonels (11-8-1, 3-3 SLC) quickly answered, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame after a pair of singles from
David Zorn and
Joey Morales brought
Alex Shermer and
Eagle Wuestney home.
The Cardinals wasted no time in the third, adding three additional runs to grab a 6-2 advantage. Nicholls chipped in a run in the bottom of the frame when a
Justin Smith single scored
Kyle Reese, making the score 6-3.
The two teams went scoreless over the next three innings and it looked as though Lamar would ride their 6-3 lead to an easy win, but the Colonels would not go down without a fight.
A
Tanner Vandevere single in the seventh brought pinch runner

In the 11
th, the Cardinals turned three doubles and a single into three additional runs to take a 9-6 stranglehold on the game. Nicholls registered a run in the bottom of the frame when
Marc Frazier scored on a Zorn single, but the Colonels would come no closer.
