Nicholls Baseball Takes a 4-2 Victory Over Grambling State

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team coupled just enough offense with its overpowering pitching staff to earn a 4-2 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels (23-14-1) and Tigers (8-26) engaged in a scoreless battle through the first three innings before Nicholls blew things open in the fourth with three runs. Darius Knight singled through the left side and advanced on a Kyle Reese single to left field. A Justin Williams walk loaded the bases before Tanner Vandevere reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Knight. In the subsequent at bat, Christian Correa doubled down the leftfield line, sending both Reese and Vandevere home.

Grambling State responded in the fifth, turning three singles into a run.

The Tigers took advantage of a pair of Colonel errors to score in the seventh and pull within a run.

Nicholls punched back in the bottom of the frame, adding a security run to take a 4-2 lead. David Zorn singled, advanced to third after a pair of walks and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly from Knight.

Justin Sinibaldi (8-1) was credited with the win based on Head Coach Seth Thibodeaux submitting a predetermined pitching rotation before the game. Sinibaldi tossed two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Dominant closer Stuart Holmes picked up his 13th save of the season, moving into second place in the nation and maintaining his first-place rank in the Southland Conference.

Brennan Williams (0-3) took the loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits through 5 1/3 innings on the mound.

Correa paced the Colonels offensively with a 1-for-3 night and two RBIs. Knight finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Reese went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Grambling State had six players register a hit in the loss, but no player turned in a multi-hit outing.

Nicholls will travel to Lake Charles for a three-game conference series against in-state rival, McNeese. The series will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday with all three matchups broadcast live on KTIB 640 AM.
