Nicholls Basketball Signs Tre O’Neal and Jay Weldon

THIBODAUX, La. The Nicholls State University men's basketball has signed Tre O'Neal and Jay Weldon for the upcoming 2015-16 season, Head Coach J.P. Piper announced Wednesday afternoon.
 
O'Neal, a 6'1'' point guard from Denver, Co., comes to Nicholls after a stint with Otero Junior College in La Junta, Co. As a member of the Rattlers, he averaged 11.7 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. O'Neal attended George Washington High School, where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals. Son of Alvis and Nicole O'Neal, Tre has one brother, Jai, and will concentrate his education on Health Science, Biology and Physical Therapy. O'Neal is the nephew of NBA Champion, Finals MVP and five-time All-Star, Chauncey Billups.
 
Weldon, a 6'1'' point guard from Sydney, Australia, joins the Colonels after an outstanding career at the Trinity Grammar School, where he averaged a double-double (18.2 points, 10 rebounds and 2.1). Son of Nathan and Paula Weldon, Jay has three siblings, Whatu, Malu and Yoorooka, and will major in Physical Education and Business Management. Weldon attended high school with current Nicholls center, Liam Thomas.
 
O'Neal and Weldon will join an experienced Colonel squad returning a number of upperclassmen. The team will look to cash in on another year of experience, coupled with an influx of new talent as they try to reach their eighth-consecutive Southland Conference Tournament in the 2015-16 season.
