THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to remain undefeated at home as the Colonels take on Troy University at 6 p.m. Wednesday night (Dec. 14) at Stopher Gym.
Nicholls is 2-0 in Thibodaux this season, winning contests against ULM and Jackson State. The Colonels have not played in Stopher since Nov. 22 and Wednesday's matchup against Troy (5-2) will be the final home game before the start of conference play.
The Colonels are coming off a split in north Louisiana, defeating Grambling on Nov. 29 before falling to LA Tech on Saturday. Despite an outstanding start against the Lady Techsters, Nicholls could not hang on to a four-point first-quarter lead in its 68-52 loss.
Cassidy Barrios has put together a strong all-around performance so far in her sophomore campaign, leading the Colonels in scoring (14.8 ppg.), rebounding (7.9), assists (2.9), total blocks (4) and field goal percentage (.442). Barrios has scored 20 or more points in three games this season, with two leading to double-doubles.
As a team, Nicholls has used its smaller lineups to its advantage by being on of the NCAA's best in causing turnovers. Heading into Wednesday's game, the Colonels lead the nation with 15.3 steals per game and are tops in turnover margin at plus-11.75. Nicholls has forced the opposition into 30 or more turnovers three times this season, and only one opponent, Jacksonville (19), had less than 20.
Troy, which is ranked No. 8 in the Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, brings a 5-2 record to Thibodaux after falling to aforementioned Dolphins of JU, 77-70, on Saturday. Troy had scored 90 or more points in five straight games before the loss and head into the matchup ranked seventh in the NCAA in scoring at 86.0 points per game.
Troy's offensive output is spread out as three players are scoring in double figures, but none more than 12 points and nine players are averaging 6 or more points. Jayla Chills heads the team at 12.1 points and in last season's meeting, which saw Troy win, 104-51, Chills was one of five Trojans to reach double figures.
