THIBODAUX, La. – Following nine days off due to the holiday break, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team will have one final nonconference matchup as the Colonels take on Spring Hill College at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Stopher Gym.
The Colonels evened their record at 6-6 with a win over Mobile in their last contest and are aiming for the first winning record in nonconference play since the 2010-11 season. A win over Spring Hill (1-10) would also give Nicholls seven wins before Southland Conference play for the first time since 2008-09.
Nicholls is 3-0 at home this season, with all three wins coming against non-Division I opponents. Spring Hill, formally of the NAIA, is in its third year competing at the NCAA Division II level.
The Colonels have been led offensively by the duo of
Ja'Dante' Frye and
DeAndre Harris, who have combined for nearly 31 points per game. Both had strong outings in the Colonels' 17-point win over Mobile, highlighted by Frye's double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Frye also reached a milestone in the game as he became just the 25th player in Colonel history to score 1,000 career points.
Spring Hill has had a rough start to its 2016-17 campaign, winning just one of its 11 games. The Badgers started the season with nine straight losses before avenging one of them with a 74-64 win against crosstown rival Mobile. In its last outing, Spring Hill fell, 71-50, to South Alabama on Dec. 19 in an exhibition game.
The Badgers are paced on offense by Walter Massey at 11.5 points per game. Massey is also the team's top rebounder with an average of 7.7.
Following Wednesday night's game, the Colonels will open conference play against UIW on Saturday, Dec. 31. The contest will be the second part of a women's-men's doubleheader versus the Cardinals, with the women set to tipoff at 1 p.m.
