HOUMA, La. – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team headed south to Houma to take on Abilene Christian and was handed a 6-1 loss in Southland Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Renaissance Family Fitness.
Nicholls (2-10, 1-1 SLC) was riding high after winning its conference opener on Tuesday against UIW, but ACU (15-6, 1-0) captured its 15th win of the season by defeating the Colonels.
Bernard Wezeman was one of three Colonels to go three sets in singles, resulting in a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 victory over Sebastian Langdon on the No. 6 court.
Nicholls fell behind 1-0 after doubles, dropping courts 3 and 2.
Sam Meessen and
Evan Karatzas were defeated 6-2 at No. 3, while Wezeman and
Max Sinn came up short at No. 2 in a 6-3 loss. Winning in doubles for the Colonels was the duo of
Oleksander Podgursky and
Kieran Cronin, who won 6-3 at No. 1 over Henry Adams and Nico Agritelley.
ACU won the first three singles matches to clinch the team victory at 4-0. Cronin fell at No. 5; Podgursky dropped a close first set at No. 1, 7-6, before falling in the second, 6-2; and Meessen was handed a 6-4, 7-5 loss by Hunter Holman on the No. 4 court.
Sinn captured the first set at No. 3, 6-2, against Agritelley, but lost the next two by the same score. Wezeman's victory prevented the shutout, but ACU claimed the final point as Karatzas was outlasted on the No. 2 court 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday, March 22 as they host Omaha. First serve at the Colonel Tennis Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m.
