BEAUMONT, Texas – Friday was not so good to the Nicholls State University men's tennis team as the Colonels were shutout by No. 72 Lamar, 7-0, in Southland Conference play at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
With the loss, Nicholls fell to 3-11 on the season and 1-2 in league play. Lamar, which has been ranked as high as 61st by the ITA, improved to 9-5 and 1-0.
The Cardinals started doubles with a shutout victory as
Kieran Cronin and
Oleksander Podgursky were defeated by the nation's No. 43 doubles team of Michael Feucht / Benny Schweizer. LU then clinched the match as
Evan Karatzas and
Sam Meessen were defeated at No. 3, 6-3. On the No. 2 court,
Max Sinn and
Bernard Wezeman held a 5-4 lead before play was suspended.
In singles, the Cardinals won four of the five completed matches in straight sets, with the lone exception coming at No. 4. Meessen and Schweizer split the first two sets by the score of 6-3 before Schweizer took the super tiebreaker, 10-5.
The Colonels will wrap up their home slate with two conference matches. Nicholls will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christ on March 30 at the Colonel Tennis Complex, and take on New Orleans on April 8 in Houma at Renaissance Family Fitness.
