THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team played its final match of the season at the Colonel Tennis Complex on Wednesday and was handed a 5-2 loss by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
Nicholls dropped to 3-12 on the season and 1-3 in league play. The win improved the Islanders' record to 13-6 and 2-0. The Colonels will play their final conference match on Friday, April 8 at Renaissance Family Fitness in Houma against New Orleans.
 
Nicholls fell behind 1-0 after doubles action, but managed to claim a victory on the No. 3 court. Kieran Cronin and Oleksander Podgursky fell 6-2 at No. 1, but Sam Meessen and Bernard Wezeman evened it up with a 6-4 win at No. 3. The Islanders went on to earn the point as Max Sinn and Evan Karatzas were defeated 6-2.
 
Podgursky, Sinn and Cronin were all defeated in straight sets as the Islanders won the first three matches in singles to secure the team victory, but the Colonels put together a valiant effort and almost came away with a split in singles. Wezeman was the first to notch a victory as he took down Paul Cook in three sets on the No. 6 court. At No. 4, Meessen won the first set against Guillaume Rauseo, lost the second, and then won 10-5 in the final to make the score 4-2.
 
The last match was a battle between Karatzas, the Colonels' lone senior, and Ricardo Mayagotia at No. 2. Mayagotia slipped past Karatzas in the first, 6-4, before Karatzas evened it up with a 7-6 (7-4) win. In the tiebreaker, they were even midway through before Mayagotia pulled away late for a 10-5 victory.
