Colonels Squander Nine-Run Lead in Beaumont

Final Stats BEAUMONT, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team held a nine-run lead midway through the fifth inning, but Lamar scored 13 unanswered to steal a 14-10 victory at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Wednesday.
 
The Colonels (12-19, 3-9 SLC) scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second to secure a quick 5-0 advantage.
 
The Cardinals (22-7, 7-2 SLC) answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but Nicholls punched back with a five-run fifth to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
 
The tide quickly turned in the bottom of the frame as Lamar stunned the Colonels with seven runs on five hits and an error.
 
The Cardinals chipped in a run in the sixth to pull within one and scored three more in the seventh capture their first lead of the ballgame. Lamar added two security runs in the eighth before closing out the contest.
 
Kyle Knauth led Nicholls offensively, batting 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Quade Smith was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Trevor Flynn went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
 
Reid Russell hit 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored to pace the Cardinal offense.
 
Jake Smith got the start for the Colonels, allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts through three solid innings of work. Hunter Speer (0-1) took the loss, surrendering two runs (one earned) over 1/3 innings.
 
Matt White (1-0) picked up the win, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts through 2 1/3 innings on the mound.
 
Nicholls will next head to San Antonio for a three-game Southland Conference matchup against Incarnate Word beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Colonels will face the Cardinals in at 2 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
