HOUMA, La. – A victory in doubles for the Nicholls State University men's tennis team was not enough against New Orleans as the visitors went on to win five of the six singles matches to hand the Colonels a 5-2 loss on Friday afternoon at Renaissance Family Fitness.
Nicholls (3-13, 1-4) got off to a great start by winning courts 1 and 3 in doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.
Sam Meessen and
Oleksander Podgursky picked up a 6-4 win at No. 1 over Luis Albuquerque and Jeffrey Hsu, and
Bernard Wezeman /
Max Sinn clinched the point with a 6-2 triumph over Gonzalo Garcia / Nicolas Kramer. Senior
Evan Karatzas and
Oscar Reeve's match went unfinished at No. 2.
But the Colonels didn't have as much luck in singles as Meessen was the only Colonel to pick up a win. UNO (7-6, 2-2) took the lead at 3-1 after winning in straight sets on courts 5, 6 and 2. Podgursky went three sets at No. 1 against Jeffrey Hsu, but after two close sets, Hsu came away with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 victory.
Meessen defeated Albuquerque at No. 4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, and Sinn almost came up with another point for the Colonels but was outlasted at No. 3 by Garcia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Colonels will wrap up the regular season on Friday, April 16 at Auburn.
