Coates Earns Hat Trick as Nicholls Rolls Past Southern

THIBODAUX, La. The Nicholls State University women's soccer team remained undefeated and senior Jess Coates recorded a hat trick on Sunday as the Colonels earned a decisive 8-0 victory against Southern at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.

HOW IT WAS WON

It took almost 19 minutes for Nicholls (2-0) to get on the board, but the Jaguars (0-1) were unable to stem the tide from that point forward.

After a foul in the box, Coates was awarded a penalty kick and launched a shot with enough force that the ball sailed completely through the net for the score.

Less than four minutes later, Kristy Helmers scored her first career goal, assisted by Coates and Emily Werenskiold.

At the 30:18 mark, Francesca Curteis got in on the action, scoring her second goal of the season off of a pass by Helmers.

The Colonels took a 3-0 lead into the break, without allowing a shot attempt by Southern.

Only six minutes into the second period, Hannah Savoie and Werenskiold found Coates, who put away her second goal of the game.

Less than five minutes later, a determined Savoie dispossessed the ball from a Jaguar and finished at the net for her first goal of the season.

In the blink of an eye (or 34 seconds later to be exact) Nicholls found pay dirt again. Helmers scored her second career goal and second goal of the match off of a pass by Werenskiold.

At the 58:27 mark, Beth Hollier and Helmers fought through a scrum and found Coates, who completed a hat trick with her third goal of the game.

Eighteen minutes later, Kristyn Daniels put an exclamation point on the outing with her first goal of the season.
