CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – For the second consecutive Sunday, the Nicholls State University soccer team earned three points as it topped Texas A&M – Corpus Christi University, 2-1, in overtime at Dugan Soccer Stadium.
"The squad showed immense determination, belief, resilience and desire in today's match," said Nicholls head coach
Mac McBride. "When you're on the road playing Friday and Sunday, it's always a big challenge. This weekend was truly a squad effort."
The Colonels improve to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the SLC while the Islanders fall to 4-5-2 (1-3-1 SLC). Nicholls has now won all five matches against Corpus Christi dating back to 2013.
Sophomore forward
Kristy Helmers gave the Colonels the lead in the 21st minute when she knocked in a shot from the 18-yard box near the left wing on a give from freshman midfielder
Hannah Bodron. The Islanders found the equalizer in the 36th minute as Kaitlyn Joy took a through ball from Siri O'Donnell and fired a shot off the hands of freshman keeper
Taylor Benoit and into the back of the net.
In the 98th minute, redshirt senior forward
Kirstie Champagne found junior midfielder
Haylee Atwell in the 18-yard box. Islanders goalie Jordan Wainwright and another defender collided, allowing Atwell to turn in the game winner.
Nicholls faces McNeese Friday on a 4 p.m. start at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
