HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore keeper
Roosa Hurmerinta tallied a season-high 11 saves as the Nicholls State University and Sam Houston State University soccer teams were held scoreless through 110 minutes Friday night at Pritchett Field.
Hurmerinta was tested early as her first save came 23 seconds into the match. The Turku, Finland, native denied seven shots in the second half, including a surefire attempt from Beryl Smith in the 88th minute that she poked in the air and collected as the ball was rolling towards goal.
The Colonels (5-8-1, 2-4-1 SLC) totaled five shots in the contest, including two on goal, and held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Nicholls' best chance came in the 55th minute when a corner from senior midfielder
Mie Elvestad deflected off of a header attempt and onto the foot of sophomore striker
Kristy Helmers. Helmers turned in the box but a slightly mishit attempt resulted in a clearance by a Bearkats (5-7-1, 2-4-1 SLC) defender.
In the second overtime, junior midfielder
Francesca Curteis took a wonderful feed in the box from sophomore midfielder
Elisabet Gunnthorsdottir before firing a shot that just missed wide left.
The Colonels return to action Sunday at Stephen F. Austin. Kickoff at the SFA Soccer Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
