CLINTON, Miss. – The Nicholls State University men's and women's cross country squads competed in the Mississippi College Invitational Saturday held at Choctaw Trails.
The men placed seventh while the women finished ninth.
"One of the biggest highlights for our men's team was
Trey Lowery,
Teril Cooper, and
Tristan Breaux running as fast or faster per mile for an 8K race, on a more challenging course, than they ran for 5K at the UNO meet to start the season," Nicholls head coach
Stefanie Slekis said. "The team's fitness has improved substantially over the past six weeks, and we're in an excellent place heading into our final week of preparation for the Southland Conference Championship to race at our best when it matters the most."
For the first time this season, Lowery was the first Colonel to cross the finish line in the men's race. The Belle Rose, Louisiana, native placed 32nd at 30 minutes even. Freshman
John Paul Spera finished 24 seconds later in 33rd place.
Sophomore
Teril Cooper (32:59.7 | 38th), freshman
Tristan Breaux (33:07.7 | 39th) and sophomore
Daryl Cooper (38:43.4 | 57th) rounded out the men's squad.
UL-Lafayette's Stanley Limoh (25:21.6) took home the men's individual title as he fronted one of three top-five finishers for the team champion Ragin' Cajuns.
Senior
Hannah Naquin once again paced the women, posting a 15th-place finish at 19:39.4. Freshman
Eleana Callejas followed in 38th place at 20:58.3.
Redshirt junior
Taylor Douglas (21:42.2 | 47th), redshirt junior
Courtney Troxclair (22:00.7) and senior
Lucija Barac (23:40.1 | 66th) also competed well.
"Hannah ran an aggressive race going out with the front pack and I'm proud of how hard she fought the final 400 meters to take her first top-15 finish of the season," Slekis said. "All of our women ran right around their best 5K mark of the season on the toughest course we've raced this season."
Georgia State's Lotte Meyberg (18:20.8) claimed the women's individual crown. ULL also took home the women's team title with four top-15 participants.
The Colonels' next competition will come at the Southland Conference Championships in Abilene, Texas, on Oct. 27.
