ABILENE, Texas – Freshman
Eleana Callejas battled harsh conditions Friday to run Nicholls State University's fastest 6k time at the Southland Conference Championships since 2014.
"Eleana had an excellent race unofficially running a personal best 5k in route to finishing her first-ever 6k," Colonels head cross country coach
Stefanie Slekis said. "Our big goal for her this season was to run under 24:30 so it's very exciting that she already reached that goal with another 6k to go."
On a cold morning with a strong north wind, Callejas crossed the finish line on the Abilene Christian cross country course at 24 minutes, 16.5 seconds, placing 64th as the Colonels finished 12th as a team. Senior
Hannah Naquin (67th | 25:18.7), redshirt juniors
Taylor Douglas (70th | 26:05.2) and
Courtney Troxclair (75th | 26:52.5), and senior
Lucija Barac (81st | 28:13.4) followed Callejas in the race.
The men were fronted by freshman
John Paul Spera, who managed a 78th-place finish at 30 minutes, 2 seconds. Spera made a 22-second improvement from the 8k at the Mississippi College Invite.
Sophomore
Trey Lowery (81st | 31:02.9), freshman
Tristan Breaux (82nd | 31:28.1), and sophomores
Teril Cooper (85th | 32:57.3) and
Daryl Cooper (86th | 38:25.7) rounded out the men's squad. Breaux's time marked a personal best as he ran 1 minute, 39 seconds faster than his last outing.
"The men's average 8k time improved 4 minutes, 5 seconds from last year's team so I'm very proud of the progress this group has made," Slekis said. "They are all excited to race at the NCAA South Central Regional in two weeks."
The regional is set for Friday, Nov. 10, at the Dale Watts '71 Cross Country Course in College Station, Texas. The women's 6k begins at 9:15 a.m., while the men's 10k commences at 10:15 a.m. The top-two teams and first four finishers not associated with those two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Louisville on Nov. 18.
