THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will make their 2017-18 home debut Tuesday night (Nov. 14) as the Colonels host Spring Hill College at 6 p.m. in Stopher Gymnasium.
Nicholls opened their season over the weekend and nearly came away with an impressive win at SMU, falling to the Mustangs, 68-61. Led by a stellar performance from junior guard
Cassidy Barrios, who had 18 points and 16 rebounds en route to being named Southland Player of the Week, Nicholls controlled the game for three quarters before eventually dropping the contest to SMU.
Sophomore
Tykeria Williams (17 points) had three of the Colonels' six 3-pointers in the opener, but the team struggled shooting in the loss finishing at 27 percent overall and 18 percent from long range.
Defensively, head coach
DoBee Plaisance's squad continued to cause problems for the opposing offense as SMU turned the ball over 23 times which led to 13 steals. Nicholls finished No. 2 in the NCAA last season in steals at over 13 per contest.
Spring Hill, a Division II program, brings a 1-1 record to Thibodaux following its 80-77 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday. Tiffany Valentine paced the Badgers with 28 points on 10 of 15 from the field and 15 rebounds. SHC opened the weekend with a 69-62 loss to the University of Tampa.
