THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball squad dropped a school-record 19 3-pointers in Friday's 127-83 victory over Spring Hill College at Stopher Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Lafayette Rutledge fronted the squad with six en route to a team-high 23 points, and fellow senior guard
Jahvaughn Powell followed with three long-range makes. Senior guard
Roddy Peters filled the stat sheet with 20 points, seven assists and six boards. This marked the Colonels' sixth straight game with a 20-point scorer.
This was the highest point total for Nicholls (2-1) since scoring 140 in the 1993 and 1994 seasons.
Andrew Dotson led the Badgers with a game-high 25 points on an 8-of-14 shooting effort.
"Threes are what we do and we love to be unselfish," Colonels head coach
Richie Riley said. "The best part about our stat line to be honest was 26 assists to 13 turnovers. That was one of our goals – to have a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. It helps when you make 19 threes. I was proud of the way we shot it."
Nicholls jumped out to a 16-6 lead with eight early points from senior guard
Tevon Saddler. The Colonels sank 10 treys during their 69-point first half scoring barrage, taking as much as a 30-point advantage after a trifecta from senior forward
Maurice O'Field at the 3:10 mark brought the score to 63-33.
Powell took over in the second half, scoring 12 points with three longballs. Freshman guard
Kevin Johnson provided a spark off the bench, recording nine points and five assists in 13 second-half minutes.
Nicholls dominated the points in the paint (48-34), points off of turnovers (45-18), fast-break points (20-4) and bench points (57-31).
The Colonels commence a three-game road stretch Sunday in a 5 p.m. contest at Western Kentucky.
