THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team is slated to play two games this weekend in the SEMO Thanksgiving Classic.
Friday pits the Colonels against Bradley of the Missouri Valley Conference and on Saturday, Nicholls takes on NAIA Evangel. Both games tip off at 1 p.m.
The Colonels (1-3) are still searching for their first road win of the year, falling at SMU and LSU. Tuesday night, Nicholls took on in-state rival LSU and had a solid start against the Tigers before dropping the game, 65-50.
Cassidy Barrios led the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds, which was her fourth double-double of the year.
Nicholls made 41 percent from the field in its win over Spring Hill College, but the shots have not been falling for the Red and Gray so far this season. As a team, the biggest differential compared to the opponents has been field goal percentage as the Colonels are shooting 35 percent and allowing teams to make 43 percent.
With 19.0 points per game, Barrios is one of two players to average double figures in scoring this season, joined by
Tykeria Williams (12.5 ppg) who missed two games with an injury. Barrios has been outstanding on the glass with a team-high 12.0 rebounds, leading Nicholls to a -4.7 rebound differential. Last season, the Colonels were outrebounded by nearly 12 per a game.
Bradley heads into the matchup with a 2-1 record and its lone loss was on the road at Illinois, 74-62. The Braves picked up wins over Omaha and Lincoln to start the season.
The Braves have two players scoring in double figures as well, Shunseere Kent (12.3 ppg) and Vanessa Markert (11.0). Kent netted 13 points in their last outing against Illinois.
Evangel is 1-5 this season with its victory coming against Stephens in the season opener, 77-63. Sydnee Garrett is their top scorer, averaging 21.3 points per game on 58.7 percent shooting.
