Colonels top Blue Mountain College, 104-68

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball squad put together a dominating all-around effort Monday night in its 104-68 victory over Blue Mountain College at Stopher Gymnasium.

The Colonels improved their record to 4-3 while outrebounding the Toppers (2-2), 48-32, and tripling their assists production, 24-8. Nicholls held significant advantages in points in the paint (56-24), points off of turnovers (34-16), second-chance points (17-5) and fast-break points (31-6).

The Colonels boasted five double-figure scorers led by seniors Kimani Jackson and Roddy Peters with 14 apiece. BMC, a Division I NAIA institution, was fronted by Quan Cothron's 17 points. LaByron Harris chipped in 11 points and seven boards.

Senior center Legend Robertin contributed five points during a 10-0 Nicholls run early in the first half to give the Colonels a 20-7 lead. Two additional six-point spurts lifted Nicholls to a 49-31 halftime margin. Jackson and Peters scored 10 points each in the opening period. Freshman Kevin Johnson totaled five of his career-high eight assists in the first half.

Although the Toppers had a 7-0 run over a 3:23 span in the second half, the Colonels responded with an 11-point scoring barrage capped by back-to-back treys from Johnson. Senior guard Lafayette Rutledge scored all 12 of his points in the second frame as Nicholls outscored BMC 55-37.

In the midst of a four-game homestand, the Colonels welcome UL-Lafayette to Stopher Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
