Colonels’ cold-shooting second half results in 105-80 defeat to Louisiana

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball squad played 24 solid minutes of basketball before a 21-point scoring barrage by Louisiana resulted in a 105-80 Ragin' Cajuns victory Friday night at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels (4-4) outscored Louisiana (6-2) 48-44 in the first half and 14-8 through 4:02 of the second half when the Ragin' Cajuns scored 21 straight. Nicholls' 6:23 scoring drought consisted of nine missed field goals and two turnovers.

The Colonels were fronted offensively by senior guard Tevon Saddler, who scored 20 points and grabbed a team-high six boards. Saddler, an Aberdeen, Maryland, native, has scored double figures in seven of eight games this season.

Fellow senior guard Roddy Peters totaled 17 points and Jahvaughn Powell added 13 on 3-6 3-pointers. Nicholls outscored Louisiana 26-9 in points off of turnovers, but the Colonels were outmatched on the glass, 55-41.

The Ragin' Cajuns had six double-figure scorers including Johnathan Stove's game high 23 (11-12 FT). Malik Marquetti (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Bryce Washington (10 points, 12 rebounds) converted double-doubles.

Peters tallied 15 first-half points as Nicholls converted 16-37 field goals in the opening period but just 9-37 in the second half. The Colonels shot a season-low 33.8 percent from the field, including 7-29 from three-point range.

Nicholls concludes its four-game home stretch Sunday against Idaho. Tipoff is set for 6:05 p.m. CT.
