THIBODAUX, La. – With nearly two weeks since its last game, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team returns to the court Friday, Dec. 15 with a 2 p.m. contest at Mississippi Valley State.
The Colonels, riding a three-game winning streak, head back to Mississippi where they won their last outing, 90-64, at Jackson State on Dec. 2. The scoring output was a season high for the Red and Gray, helped by a team-high 16 points from
Tykeria Williams. Along with 22 points in a win over SUNO, Williams went on to earn Southland Conference Player of the Week.
Nicholls has shot over 50 percent in each of the three games during the winning streak, highlighted by a 62-percent showing in its win over Evangel. One factor in the increased shooting aim has been the distribution of the basketball as the Colonels are averaging 18.0 assists in the three-game stretch.
Defensively, the Colonels have totaled double figures in steals in all but one game this season – their 15-point loss at LSU. After eight games, Nicholls is ranked 12th in the NCAA with 12.5 per game.
Williams and
Cassidy Barrios are the lone Colonels scoring in double digits this season, paced by Barrios' 16.5 points per game. Williams is second at 13.2 ppg and
Tia Charles is third with 9.4.
Mississippi Valley State is searching for its first win of the year, sitting at 0-8. All of the Devilette's opponents have been Division I and the losses include games against Southern Miss, Colorado, UTSA and UMass.
Like the Colonels, MVSU has two players scoring in double figures. LaKendra Bassett is tops at 14.6 and Kristy Parker is second with 13.6. In the last outing at Western Kentucky, Bassett posted a solid game with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and added six rebounds.
