THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team built a 38-point halftime lead en route to a 92-51 victory Saturday night against Culver-Stockton College (Mo.) at Stopher Gymnasium.
The Colonels (5-5) boasted five double-figure scorers, including senior guards
Roddy Peters and
Lafayette Rutledge, who each totaled a game-high 18 points. Other Colonels in double digits included senior guards
Tevon Saddler (15) and
Jahvaughn Powell (14) and freshman center
Ryghe Lyons (12). Nicholls amassed a season-high 18 steals and recorded 21 assists, marking the fourth time this season with 20-plus helpers in a game.
Nicholls dominated all facets of the game, outscoring the Wildcats (3-9) in points off turnovers (48-9), points in the paint (48-22), bench points (40-20), fast-break points (32-4) and second-chance points (15-5).
Peters tallied 13 points in six minutes and Rutledge knocked down four of his six threes during the Colonels' 52-point first half. Nicholls used 20 consecutive points early on to balloon its margin to 26-4, holding Culver-Stockton scoreless for 7 minutes and 39 seconds. Sparked by six straight points by Peters later in the half, the Colonels ripped off a 25-point scoring barrage to take a commanding 52-9 margin.
Lyons tallied eight points, four boards and two blocks in the second half as Nicholls managed a 40-37 points advantage to cruise to the win.
The Colonels travel to face Tulane Monday with tipoff at Fogelman Arena scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN3.
