Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Colonels come up short in non-conference finale at Seattle U

SEATTLE – Seniors Jahvaughn Powell and Roddy Peters combined for 47 points but it was not enough as the Nicholls State University men's basketball team suffered a 95-89 setback against Seattle University Saturday afternoon at the Connolly Complex.

Peters totaled a game-high 26 while Powell added a season-high 21 on a 5-6 effort from beyond the arc. Peters also chipped in a team-high eight boards. With the help of Peters, Nicholls held a 38-11 advantage in points off the bench. The Colonels (6-7) finished with a season-high eight blocks, as freshman Ryghe Lyons and senior Kimani Jackson contributed four and three, respectively.

The Redhawks (9-6) were led by Jordan Hill, Matej Kavas and Aaron Menzies. Hill scored 23 while Kavas, a preseason All-WAC Second Team honoree, and Menzies poured in 20. Menzies converted a double-double with 14 rebounds.

Seattle U led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 17-2 lead after senior Kimani Jackson got poked in the eye during the opening tip. The Redhawks made seven of their first nine three-pointers, taking a 29-8 advantage after Kavas knocked down the seventh.

After Seattle U opened the second half with two free throws, the Colonels cut the deficit from 11 to three with eight straight. Unfortunately, the Redhawks would counter with eight of their own to regain the 11-point margin.

In the midst of an 11-3 run, Nicholls found itself down three with 42 seconds to play when a loose ball found the hands of Seattle U's Josh Hearlihy who fed Kavas for the game-sealing layup with 14 seconds.

The Colonels open Southland Conference play Thursday at Stopher Gymnasium against Northwestern State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT).
