THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball program recorded a 4-3 win against Mississippi Valley State University Wednesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels utilized five pitchers in the victory including freshman
Zach Autin who picked up the first win of his career. The lefty tossed 2.1 scoreless relief innings and struck out four.
Sophomore
Adam Tarver notched his fifth save of the season, working around a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning.
Nicholls (18-13) scratched two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After senior designated hitter
Juan Givan was hit by a pitch, junior first baseman
Gage Teer ripped a two-out double off the bottom of the left-center field fence. Junior outfielder
Gavin Wehby then plated Teer on a shot that skipped through the right side to put the Colonels ahead 2-0.
Nicholls starter
Bryan Taylor did not allow a hit through the first three innings and struck out five batters during that time. Taylor ran into some problems in the fourth as the first knock he allowed was a solo homer to Arrington Smith.
MVSU (4-18) was able to score two more runs in the frame to take a 3-2 advantage and end Taylor's impressive run on the mound.
The Colonels quickly responded in the next half inning with an Evan Valdez sacrifice fly to tie the game at three.
Autin (1-0) entered with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. He retired Kanaikai Gaughen on a groundout to shortstop
Joey Morales.
After holding the Delta Devils scoreless for the next two innings, Nicholls found its winning run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to left field from Wehby.
The four Colonels relievers held MVSU scoreless for the final five innings of the contest.
At the dish junior left fielder
Chet Niehaus produced a team-high three hits. Wehby earned his seventh multiple RBI performance this season, the most by a Nicholls baseball student-athlete.
Delta Devils reliever Jackson Webb fell to 0-4 after allowing the game-winning run.
