THIBODAUX, La. – Looking for its third win at home, the Nicholls State University men's tennis team took on Xavier (La.) and was handed a 4-0 loss Wednesday evening at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
"It was a tough loss for us against an extremely seasoned Xavier squad," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "Five of the six singles matches were in the third set or heading into the third set. We did show our youth and inexperience in the tight moments, but still lots of encouragement. We're only going to improve, and there was a lot of fight out there today.
Trailing 2-0 after the visitors won doubles and the No. 1 singles match in straight sets, the Colonels won four first sets in the other five matches. But
Tobias Lentz and
Nestor Giribet Lopez could not hang out in three-set battles as the Gold Rush clinched the victory with wins on the No. 3 and 4 courts.
Alvaro Barranco Vilaltella held the lead in his third set at No. 2 when play was suspended, as did
Lewis Cox on the No. 5 court.
