THIBODAUX, La. – With rain in the forecast, the Nicholls State University men's tennis team squared off in a doubles-less match against UTRGV and fell 4-2 Saturday at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Nicholls fought back from a 3-0 deficit by winning the No. 5 and 6 singles matches.
Lewis Cox won at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zane Kohrs, while
Nestor Giribet Lopez won 6-4, 6-4 against Clement Sarradin. But at the top line,
Oleksander Podgursky battled Koby Jensen before falling in three sets, with each alternating 6-4 wins.
"We started out a bit slow, but we really dug in and made a run at it," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "Lewis and Nestor picked up big wins at 5 and 6, and Sasha (Podgursky) had a lead in the third set. The 3-0 deficit was just too much to overcome, but we're learning. Overall, our goal is to have consistency across the lines from beginning to end, and we need to understand what it takes to be successful."
UTRGV (5-8) jumped out to the 3-0 lead after winning in straight sets, including two sets with shutouts.
