TUCSON, Ariz. – The Nicholls State University baseball team touched down in Tucson Wednesday night as it battles the University of Arizona in a three-game set beginning Thursday at Hi Corbett Field.
The games on Thursday and Friday are set for 6 p.m. (MST) while Saturday's finale will commence at 1 p.m. Please note that Tucson does not observe daylight savings time so this translates to 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the central time zone.
The Colonels (9-15) are winners of three of their last four, reigning victorious in 2-of-3 against McNeese before securing their first-ever win over Mississippi State on Tuesday. During that stretch, Nicholls' starting pitchers boasted a 1.04 ERA, allowing just three earned runs over 26 innings.
Senior lefty
Alex Ernestine will once again throw on Friday. He hurled his first career complete-game shutout Friday against the Cowboys, scattering four hits and striking out two. Consequently, Ernestine was named the LSWA and Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Saturday starter
Cayden Hatcher flaunts the ninth-best strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.7) in Division I baseball.
At the plate, senior infielder
Gage Teer boasts the squad's top batting average at .329. Fellow senior infielder
Joey Morales is on a seven-game hitting streak, batting .300 in that period.
The Wildcats (13-10) took two games from Washington State this past weekend. Arizona has allowed just 67 runs through 23 games, which is the program's lowest total since 1974. Its pitching staff has a 2.48 ERA, which is the sixth-best mark in the nation and is allowing just 7.09 hits per nine innings, which ranks 13th in the country. Cesar Salazar fronts the Wildcats with a .373 batting average and a 21-game on-base streak.
