Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell 20-4 to No. 16 Southern Miss in its final game of the Cox Diamond Invitational Sunday at the Blue Wahoos Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (8-3) put up eight runs in the second inning and led 15-0 after six. Catcher Bryant Bowen and infielder Casey Maack fronted the Golden Eagles with three hits apiece.
The Colonels (1-10) scored three in the seventh inning. After junior infielder
Ethan Valdez roped a one-out double to left field, freshman
Xane Washington followed with a triple to the left-center field gap. Senior infielder
Kyle Knauth then plated Washington on a single up the middle, and senior outfielder
Chet Niehaus brought home Knauth on a two-out infield single.
Washington earned his second RBI in the eighth, scoring redshirt junior
Brady Bell on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Sophomore lefty
Bryan Taylor (0-3) was tagged for six runs (two earned) on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Southern Miss reliever Sean Tweedy (1-0) picked up the win as he closed out the fifth inning.
Nicholls returns to action in a two-game series against Sacred Heart commencing Tuesday. First pitch from Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
