Texas A&M-Corpus Christi advanced Thursday with a dominating 75-62 win over McNeese in the opening round. Senior guard Brittany Mbamalu scored 22 to lead the Islanders in the win.
Nicholls and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will be meeting for the 16th time, with the Islanders holding a slim 8-7 advantage.
The Colonels and Islanders met only once this season, with AMCC dominating at home
in a 76-55 win.
Cassidy Barrios led Nicholls with 15 points in the loss, while Mbamalu had 29 points with six 3-pointers.
The matchup features two All-Southland selections, led by the Colonels' Barrios who was named Player of the Year, First Team All-Southland, and All-Defensive. Barrios is the first Colonel in program history to garner POY, and is the second to be named first team and all-defensive. Mbamalu was a second-team selection for the Islanders.
