SAN ANTONIO – Riding a three-game winning streak, the Nicholls State University baseball team took off for San Antonio Thursday morning as it plays UIW in a three-game series beginning Friday at Sullivan Field.
The contest on Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's games commencing at 2 and 1 p.m., respectively.
The Colonels (13-21, 5-7 SLC) outscored Alcorn 31-6 in their last two wins and handed Sam Houston State its first conference loss on Sunday. It was Nicholls' first victory over the Bearkats since the 2015 season.
During the three-game stretch, junior infielder
Ethan Valdez is batting .667 (6-9) with an .813 on-base percentage. The San Antonio native has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games. Redshirt junior infielder
Brady Bell has hit a homer in two straight games, falling a double short of the cycle in the finale against Alcorn.
The Colonels hold top-five marks in Division I in batters hit by pitch and sacrifice bunts. Nicholls ranks second in the country with 72 student-athletes plunked and fifth in the nation with 33 sacrifice bunts. Senior shortstop

th in the league with a .348 batting average.
The Cardinals (22-12, 8-4 SLC) have won nine of their last 10 games, including a sweeping of SFA on the road and a 31-2 bruising of Prairie View A&M. UIW is 17-5 at home this season and sits atop the league with a .301 batting average.
