HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team travels to Hammond for the first two games on Friday and Saturday then returns home to Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field for the finale on Sunday against Southeastern Louisiana University.
The contests at Alumni Field will begin at 6 p.m. with the finale set for 1 p.m. Burger and Beer Sunday will be in effect at the Did, featuring $1 off burgers all game and 2-for-$5 canned beer in the fifth inning only.
The Colonels (15-23, 6-9 SLC) are currently in eighth place in the league standings, falling in 2-of-3 at UIW this past weekend. Nicholls does have impressive victories, handing Sam Houston State (13-2) one of its two losses and taking a home series over third-place McNeese.
One of the storylines this season has been how many times Colonel batters have been hit by pitch. Nicholls student-athletes have been plunked 78 times, breaking the program's 2013 record of 74 with 18 regular-season games remaining.
The Colonels rank third in Division I in batters hit by pitch, three behind leaders Florida A&M and New Mexico State. Nicholls also sits sixth with 37 sacrifice bunts, four behind leader Hawaii's 41. Fans can expect to see graduate student
Christian Bahlinger on the mound this weekend as his 24 appearances front the league and rank third in the country.
With head coach
Seth Thibodeaux at the helm, Nicholls has won two of its last three over SLU on the road. The Colonels are searching for their first home win over the Lions since 2015, dropping their last three at the Did.
SLU (25-16, 12-6 SLC) is in second place in the SLC standings, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over McNeese. The Lions have been through a rough stretch lately, losing six of their last seven contests, including 4-3 defeats to Jackson State and UL-Lafayette. SLU scored just six runs in three games against Northwestern State, a series that included two Lion losses.
SLU's squad has proven to be disciplined at the dish, ranking first in the league and 14
th in the nation in walks (204). The Lions also have foot speed as only two other teams in Division I have more than their 2.5 stolen bases per game.
