THIBODAUX, La. – Currently tied for eighth in the Southland Conference standings, the Nicholls State University baseball team hopes to solidify its tournament seeding in a three-game set against Lamar University at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field beginning Friday.
The contests Friday and Saturday will commence at 6 p.m. with the finale starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Colonels (17-25, 7-11 SLC) dominated Southern, 12-3, Tuesday behind 12 hits from nine different student-athletes, highlighted by a two-run homer by senior
Kyle Knauth and a bases-clearing, two-RBI triple from freshman
Xane Washington.
Nicholls took Friday's game against Southeastern Louisiana, 6-3, behind 6.1 solid innings from senior
Alex Ernestine. Graduate student
Christian Bahlinger picked up the save with 2.2 flawless innings complemented by three strikeouts. In Bahlinger's last three outings, he has tossed 9.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and recording seven strikeouts.
In league play, senior
Joey Morales fronts the squad with a .378 batting average. Fellow senior
Chet Niehaus has a team-high 13 RBIs, currently riding an 11-game hitting streak and boasts a league-high .471 on-base percentage.
The Cardinals (14-28, 8-13 SLC) are in ninth place in the league standings but have won five of its last six, including a road sweep over Corpus Christi. In conference play, Logan Lejeune carries a team-high .327 batting average. Although Jason Blanchard has yet to record a win, his 3.53 ERA is the team's lowest in conference games.
