CoSIDA Release
AUSTIN, Texas – Nicholls State University softball pitcher
Megan Landry has been named 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Second Team, as the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) revealed Monday its Academic All-America® honors for Division I softball.
With a 4.0-grade point average as a secondary education – English major, Landry was one of 29 student-athletes of the 33 honorees to have a 3.9 GPA or higher. Of the three teams, 19 members had a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"I'm very proud of this honor that
Megan Landry has earned," said
Angel Santiago, Nicholls softball head coach. "There are not many student-athletes in the country who can excel at a high level on the field and most importantly be able to show this type of excellence in the classroom. Self-motivation, quality preparation, time management, spiritual mindfulness and just pure competitive toughness are the traits by which Megan leads. She is a complete student-athlete who has fully taken advantage of her education at Nicholls State University."
On the field, Landry ranked 27th in the NCAA in victories after going 22-7 in the circle with a Southland-best 1.94 ERA. The Central Catholic graduate was second in the Southland in opponent batting average (.209) and ranked fourth in strikeouts with 127. She had 10 appearances this season without allowing an earned run, which included eight starts and two shutouts.
Landry has received a plethora of awards in her junior campaign, both on and off the field. In conference, she was named Pitcher of the Year, First Team, All-Tournament and was a three-time Pitcher of the Week. She also received NFCA All-South Region Third Team and All-Louisiana Second Team. In addition, she garnered the Nicholls Female Student-Athlete Award for Academic Excellence and was eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America® honors after being named Academic All-District VI earlier this year.
Landry headlines an outstanding year in the classroom for the Colonel softball team. In the 2018 spring semester, 19 members of the squad earned a 3.0 GPA or higher.
As a league, the Southland had five student-athletes on the Academic All-America® teams, second to only the SEC which had six. Joining Landry from the SLC were Kate Myers (Central Arkansas), Brianna Barnhill (Abilene Christian), Lindsey McLeod (Sam Houston State), and Demi Janak (HBU).
Landry is just the seventh Colonel in all sports to earn Academic All-America® first, second, or third team. She is the first softball player to receive the honor since 1992 (Vicki Chesnutt).
