THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team concludes non-conference tournament play this weekend, competing in the Bowling Green State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Colonels (2-8) will battle IUPUI and Marshall in the Stroh Center Friday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, before facing host BGSU in their finale at 11 a.m. Saturday. All three matches will be streamed via YouTube.
This will be the first meeting for the Colonels with all three opponents.
Despite dropping all three matches in straight sets at the Texas A&M Invitational, Nicholls had several positive showings. Senior right-side hitter
Brieanna Hill was named to the all-tournament team, totaling 2.0 kills per set with an eight-kill, .300 attacking percentage highlight against Pepperdine. Junior libero
Emily Venable tallied double-digit digs in each match, including a season-high 17 versus Missouri State and Texas A&M.
vs. IUPUI | Friday, Sept. 14 | 10 a.m.
The Jags (2-9), chosen fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll, have lost five straight matches. Their two wins came over Purdue Fort Wayne (Aug. 28) and SIUE (Sept. 1) in straight sets. Six-rotation utility player Maggie Gibson is one of three Division I women's volleyball student-athletes with three triple-doubles, finishing those contests with double-digit kills, assists and digs.
vs. Marshall | Friday, Sept. 14 | 3 p.m.
The Thundering Herd improved to 5-6 with their impressive four-set win over Georgia Tech in their last match of the Bama Bash. Expect to see most sets go to outside hitter Ciara Debell, whose 10.9 attacks per set front the C-USA. Marshall was tabbed to finish eighth in the league's preseason poll, returning just five letterwinners from last year's squad.
at BGSU | Saturday, Sept. 15 | 11 a.m.
The Falcons posted a 1-2 record at the Cleveland State Tournament, dropping straight-set matches to Illinois and UC Irvine before besting Cleveland State in five sets. BGSU was picked to finish second in the MAC East behind Ohio, boasting Preseason All-MAC honorees Katie Kidwell and Kallie Seimet. The Falcons rank atop the MAC with 39.8 attacks per set, largely due to Seimet's 5.9 digs per set, a mark that ranks third in Division I.
