Cross Country squads to compete at McNeese Cowboy Stampede Saturday

Live Results

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University cross country squads will travel to Lake Charles Saturday to participate in the Lake Charles Toyota McNeese Cowboy Stampede at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex.

The women's 5k will commence at 8:30 a.m. with the men's 4-mile following at 9 a.m. The women's group will consist of sophomores Eleana Callejas and Joyce Kiplagat and freshmen Isabelle Caron, Faith Keter, Julia Garcia Verges and Lara Reifers. The men's pack will race junior Teril Cooper and freshmen Cameron Carter, Daniel Figueroa, Tyler Granger, Jonathan Hernandez and Dustin Worley.

"The Cowboy Stampede serves two purposes for our team," Nicholls head coach Stefanie Slekis said. First, it gives us an opportunity to race at the venue where the Southland Conference Championship will be held in one month. Second, we have an excellent opportunity to see how we can compete against five Southland Conference teams we haven't yet raced this season. The course has been altered due to all the rain in the area, but it will still give our young team an opportunity to familiarize themselves with what this course is like since only two members of our team have raced here before."

The meet is expecting nearly 600 student-athletes from 15 colleges. SLC foes participating include Central Arkansas (men), Houston Baptist, McNeese, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Alcorn, Bossier Parish Community College, Grambling, Louisiana Tech (women), Pearl River Community College (women), Prairie View (men), Texas Southern (women), UL-Lafayette and Xavier (La.) will comprise the rest of the field.

Garcia Verges fronted the Colonels at both events this season, running a 17-minute, 11.02-second 4k at the Nicholls Invitational and a 20:19.65 3-mile at the LSU Invitational, placing fourth and 20th, respectively. Hernandez spearheaded the men's pack at the LSU Invite, crossing the 4-mile finish line at 22:22.60 for 32nd place.
