CHICAGO - Nicholls State University football's
Julien Gums and
Sully Laiche received STATS FCS National Player of the Week honorable mentions, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
Both were instrumental in the Colonels' 27-23 win at UIW over the weekend. The duo also garnered runners-up in the weekly Southland awards.
With the two senior running backs -
Dontrell Taylor and
Kendall Bussey - sidelined Saturday due to injuries, Gums shined as the feature back and finished with a career-high 178 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He scored the Colonels' first and last touchdowns of the game, including a 1-yarder late in the fourth quarter to make the final score.
Laiche spearheaded an impressive performance by the defense, which helped limit UIW to field goals in three of their red-zone trips. In the third quarter, the standout defensive lineman stuffed a run up the middle on fourth-and-goal from the 1 and followed with a sack in the final seconds of the game to all but end it. For the game, Laiche totaled six solo tackles with 2.0 for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble.
Laiche was also named LSWA co-Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Monday evening.
UP NEXT
Nicholls is back in Thibodaux for the next two weeks with its final home games of the regular season. The Colonels will host HBU at 3 p.m. on Nov. 9 for their Hall of Fame Game. The matchup will be broadcast on Cox Sports TV and ESPN+.
