Nicholls ended its nonconference slate on a high note by taking down in-state rival ULM, 74-59, in Thibodaux last week. Senior
Chrystal Ezechukwu led the way with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Colonels remained perfect at home.
While Nicholls has continued to impress at Stopher Gymnasium by winning 14 of its last 15, including a 30-point win over the Islanders last season, the Colonels will be aiming for their first victory outside of Lafourche Parish in the 2019-20 campaign. But four of the road losses came at nationally-ranked Indiana and LSU, and at Rice and TCU.
Ezechukwu and
Airi Hamilton each scored in double figures in the win over ULM, with Hamilton adding 14. Hamilton is averaging 11.2 points on the season while shooting 45.1 percent, and Ezechukwu is at 9.5 points and leads the team with 8.2 rebounds.
The Islanders have been one of the top teams in the Southland, posting a 6-3 overall record with wins over UTRGV and Prairie View A&M. The squad has yet to lose at home this season with a perfect 4-0 mark.
Two Islanders are scoring in double figures, led by Dalesia Booth's 13.6 points per game. Alexes Bryant is second at 12.1, and leads the team with 7.2 rebounds and 15 blocks.
The Colonels and Islanders are tied all-time with nine wins each. Nicholls took the regular season matchup, 85-55, but the Islanders eliminated the Red and Gray in the Southland Conference Tournament, 69-56.
