THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's and men's basketball teams will take on the University of New Orleans in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium. The women tipoff at 1 p.m. with the men to follow at 3:30.
The women's team (17-10, 11-4 SLC) has won four games in a row and is on the brink on a historic season. With three contests remaining in the regular season, the Colonels could match their program-best of 19 regular season wins and possibly become the first ever in program history to win 20 games. Nicholls has won 19 games twice in a campaign, last year and in 2012-13.
Nicholls is 9-1 at home and avenged its lone loss with a 78-55 win at McNeese on Wednesday. With the exception of their 84-81 win over Sam Houston State, all the Colonels' victories in Thibodaux have been by double figures.
New Orleans heads to Stopher with an 11-14 overall mark and a 7-9 record in the Southland. UNO is currently seventh in the standings and a win would secure its spot in the postseason tournament.
The Colonels defeated UNO earlier in the season in New Orleans, 76-62. Chrystal Ezechukwu led the way with 18 points in the victory.
For the men, the Colonels (12-16, 5-10 SLC) will be looking to bounce back from a home loss against McNeese Wednesday. Nicholls is currently 11th in the standings and would likely need to win its final three games to get into the postseason. Including Saturday, the remaining three games are on Broussard Court where Nicholls is 7-3 this season.
Jeremiah Jefferson ranks sixth in the Southland in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per contest. In the last outings, the graduate transfer scored 26 and made a combined 11 of 21 from 3-point range. Gavin Peppers is second on the squad with 14.3 ppg.
New Orleans has been one of the best teams in the Southland this season, posting a 16-11 record and an 11-5 mark in the Southland. Following their one-point loss to Nicholls in early February, the Privateers reeled off three straight wins before falling Wednesday to Sam Houston State, which clinched the regular season championship.
UNO is led in scoring by Ezekial Charles (12.9 ppg) and Bryson Robinson (11.3). Charles' last game was against Nicholls, while Robinson led UNO with 15 points in its loss against Sam Houston.
